How is tungsten carbide plate made?

Tungsten carbide plate is a type of hard alloy material known for its high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and superior strength. It is widely used in metal stamping dies, wear-resistant parts, and mechanical processing. So, how is a tungsten carbide plate made?

 

The production process of tungsten carbide sheets mainly involves several key steps. First is raw material preparation—primarily using tungsten carbide (WC) powder and cobalt powder. These materials are mixed in precise ratios to ensure uniform composition. Next is ball milling, where the mixture is wet-milled to achieve an ideal particle size and improve powder cohesion. This is followed by drying and granulation, forming granulated material with good flowability and pressability.

 

The next stage is pressing and forming, where the granulated material is pressed into plate-shaped blanks using molds. This is followed by high-temperature sintering, in which the material is treated in a vacuum or protective atmosphere furnace at over 1300°C. This process sinters the powder into a dense, solid structure and is critical to the final performance of the tungsten carbide plate.

 

After sintering, some tungsten carbide plates undergo precision machining or surface treatment to enhance dimensional accuracy and extend service life.

 

Thanks to this rigorous and complex process, tungsten carbide plates possess exceptional wear resistance, compressive strength, and stability. They are widely used in high-strength cutting tools, metal forming equipment, and wear-resistant pads in various industrial fields.
